This year, Greater Overbrook String Band partnered with the Art Institute of Philadelphia for some exciting projects.   In the summer of 2015, nine students from the Department of Fashion Design submitted sketches for the “2016 GOSB Captain Suit Design Competition.”   The winning design was submitted by Brianna C.L. Bailey.  2nd place was awarded to Kellsie Costigan, and Honorable Mention went to Janaiana Carr.  After the competition, Brianna met with costume maker Al Del Buono to refine the design in preparation for production!   Our relationship with the Art Institute is continuing in the fall of 2015 as fashion design students will work with Art Institute faculty member Karen Karuza to design and fabricate costumes for the Greater Overbrook dancers to wear in the “Havin’ a Hula-Va Mum Time” performance at the 2016 Mummer’s Parade.    This exciting partnership between GOSB and a Philly educational institution was the first time in Mummer’s history that local students were able to formally get involved in the design and fabrication of a Captain’s Suit and dancer’s costumes for a Philadelphia Mummers String Band.
